Verdi Requiem

Post Date: 4 November 2013
Post Type: Repertoire

Am currently rehearsing the Verdi Requiem with the Exeter University Symphony Orchestra and the university Choral Society.

The requiem has always been a favourite of mine - I remember hearing it for the first time when I was a teenager and being completely blown away by the experience.

Many people (not Italians!) have mixed feelings about Verdi, specifically the operas, as they tend to veer from unbelievably fine dramatic moments into 'oom pah pah'ones.

The Requiem is completely free of them - there is not a bad note in the whole piece. From that super quiet opening the drama unfolds, unrelenting until the final notes.
